Medbury School Foundation Building
A new two-storey, four-classroom building has been added to Medbury School as part of a broader regeneration plan for the private boys' school in Ilam, Christchurch. Sheppard & Rout Architects aimed to establish a cohesive architectural style throughout the campus. The modern design prioritises adaptable learning spaces, with large glazed openings connecting classrooms to shared areas and smaller breakout spaces. A central shared learning space, bathed in afternoon sun, opens to a courtyard for outdoor learning.
Natural light and ventilation are maximized while shielding from direct sunlight using vertical sun-screening fins on east and west-facing facades. Brickwork adds texture, with the school's blue and red colors integrated as accents, marking entrances. Deep window reveals and bronze-colored aluminum panels add verticality to the elevations.
Structurally, seismic strength and internal flexibility were paramount. The design of the new building complements the historic Ballantyne House nearby in scale, material, color, and position. The entrance aligns with a historic window, and the foyer overlooks a prominent Redwood tree on the grounds, ensuring harmony with the existing heritage.
