Tim’s NZIA fellowship

At the recent NZIA Canterbury awards ceremony, Tim Dagg quietly received his fellowship to the NZIA. As many of you know Tim has been with S&R since he was a junior in the late 80’s, and since then it’s rare that a project has passed through the office without his input.

Tim was born in Queenstown and grew up on his family's sheep station. Inspired by early exposure to architectural drawing and local architect John Blair, Tim pursued his interest in architecture despite no family precedent. Initially studying engineering at Canterbury University, he shifted to architectural draughting at Christchurch Polytechnic and gained practical experience at Sheppard and Rout. He later completed his architectural degree at Auckland School of Architecture.

Returning to Sheppard and Rout, Tim observed a significant shift from traditional draughting to digital technology in architecture. Influenced by Jonty Rout’s focus on detail and materiality, Tim has worked on various projects, including the notable Burwood Hospital Development, one of New Zealand's largest building projects. This project involved extensive collaboration with various stakeholders and a large budget, highlighting the contrast between large-scale and personal residential projects.

Tim emphasizes the importance of balancing design aspirations with cost realities and integrating environmental considerations, such as natural ventilation and shading, into both commercial and residential designs. His work reflects a commitment to thoughtful, budget-conscious, and climate-appropriate architectural solutions.
